Taipei, Nov. 17 (CNA) Smokers will have to spend less time lighting up and more time looking around starting April 1, 2014, when smoking at national parks and scenic areas will be banned outside of designated spots.
Once the changes come into effect, violators will be subject to fines between NT$2,000 (US$68) and NT$10,000, the Health Promotion Administration announced.
The move comes as a response to increasing complaints of second-hand smoke while trying to breathe in fresh air, according to administration head Chiou Shu-ti.
If a park or natural area does not have any designated smoking areas, smoking will not be allowed anywhere on the premises, the administration said.
