Tobacco company was fined again for advertisement violation. Do not become the hired gun of tobacco company—BHP to media Having been fined NT$ 5 million for marketing violations, smokeless tobacco was promoted as a new product via TV media under the pretext for unfairly treated by the government. Taiwan Bureau of Health Promotion indicates that the tobacco industry committed a blatant violation of Article 9 of the Tobacco Hazards Prevention Act. Article 9 reads: “the promotion and advertisement of tobacco products in any form of reporting of the tobacco product is prohibited, including the endorsement of tobacco products through interviews or reports.” By transferring its authority to the District Health Bureau, the parties are seeking the maximum penalty of 25 million New Taiwan Dollars to combat the large impact of the tobacco industry’s mass media advertisements. Simultaneously, on June 29, the BHP sent notices to health inspectors throughout the country to survey and to monitor any illegal activities at the point of sale of tobacco products. Any evidences of promotion will be subject to criminal sanctions on case by case basis. To avoid any promoting activities, BHP has advised mass media outlets to approach such issue cautiously.
