TAIPEI--Sixty-five tertiary schools in Taiwan have banned smoking on their campuses as part of an effort to make colleges smoke-free, a Ministry of Education (MOE) official said yesterday.
The ministry hopes to increase the number of nonsmoking campuses to 72 by the end of next year, said Wang Chun-chuan, head of the MOE’s department of physical education.

It takes a lot of work and the cooperation of all faculty members and students to prevent people from smoking on campus, Wang said.

Last year, the MOE launched an initiative to ban smoking on college campuses.

The smoking ban is more difficult to maintain at schools that offer evening classes since the students are usually adults who are long term smokers and it is hard for them to abstain, Wang said.
